Description

The foot of the chalice is made of silver-toned metal, stepped in form with a round base, decorated with a floral ornament, with a donor's inscription around the edge. The lower tier of the foot is decorated with a garland depicting cherubim, leaves, fruit, and flowers, above which is a "band" leading into a stem with a winding floral ornament and a rod (fragmentary) for attaching the cup. Around the edge is the Church Slavonic inscription: "In the year 1757, the Cossack Pavlo Kostiantynovych of the Korsun kurin commissioned this cup for the forgiveness of his sins, for the sloboda of [...], dedicated to the Holy Trinity."

The foot of the chalice belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.

Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion.

The chalice represents the cup given by Jesus Christ to his disciples at the Last Supper, with the words: "Drink of it, all of you, for this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
