Description
At the bottom center of the composition, against a backdrop of yellow hills, is the Mother of God, in a dark-green garment and light-brown maphorion. Behind her are two angels in white garments, flanked by the apostles with hands raised upward. At the top center is the frontal figure of Jesus Christ, in a gesture of blessing, set within a round mandorla of glory with diverging rays and depictions of stars; the figure is surrounded by a yellow-ochre glow. On either side of the mandorla are two angels with raised wings, supporting the glory. The angel shown on the left wears a red chiton and green himation, the one on the right ochre-toned garments. The hills have the traditional stony ridges and flat areas; at the top of the hill above the Mother of God's head is a round stone bearing the imprint of Christ's footprints. The panel is reinforced with two horizontal battens. The margins of the icon are painted red-brown.
The icon belonged to the collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda.
Legend: the image of the Ascension of the Lord recreates the moment of Jesus Christ's rising into heaven on the fortieth day after the Resurrection. The Savior ascends within a mandorla accompanied by angels, while the Mother of God and the apostles witness the event. The Ascension symbolizes the glorification of Christ, the raising of human nature to heavenly glory, and his inseparable presence with his Church.
