Description
The baldachin is made of silk fabric of various textures, consisting of a central panel to which side "flaps" are attached, which hang freely downward when the baldachin is in use. The central panel is of white moiré, rectangular, mounted on a wooden frame. The front face of the panel, which hangs downward, is decorated with a centered embroidered composition: a christogram of the letters "IHS," surmounted by a Catholic cross and "lit" below by three short rays; around the composition is a bright, multicolored radiant glow (embroidered in gold thread with the addition of metal sequins and colored paste-glass beads). The side "flaps" are of cream-colored ribbed fabric with a satin floral pattern, decorated with embroidery in the form of a winding grapevine with clusters, leaves, tendrils, and interwoven ears of grain. The outer contour of the "flaps" is decorated with gold-toned galloon and a fringe trim of gold metal thread. The lines where the "flaps" attach to the frame were decorated with gold-toned galloon, over which decorative metal nails were driven. The reverse of the wooden frame, in the central part of the baldachin, is backed with brown-toned leatherette.
The baldachin served as a kind of "canopy" over a sacred object, mounted on wooden columns.
The object entered the museum's holdings in 1949. It was used in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kharkiv.
