Description
Made of brocade fabric with a light-blue ground, woven with a floral pattern in gold and silver metal thread. It has the form of a four-sided rectangular cloth. It is decorated with golden galloon bearing small floral branches; along the bottom edge is an added strip of yellow fabric, which sets off the sewn-on golden fringe trim; at the center is an applied four-armed cross with radiance, made of gold metal thread. The nabedrennik is lined on the reverse with sand-colored cotton fabric. A ribbon is sewn to the upper corners for wearing the nabedrennik over the shoulder.
Note: the nabedrennik is part of the liturgical vestments of an Orthodox or Greek Catholic priest. It symbolizes the "spiritual sword" (from the Greek epigonation) — that is, the Word of God, with which the clergyman is armed to struggle against unbelief and impiety for truth and justice, and which signifies the Lord's victory over death.
It is awarded to priests for zealous and long service.
The light-blue (or blue) nabedrennik is worn on feasts dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos and on days commemorating wonder-working icons of the Mother of God, since the color blue is a symbol of her purity and immaculateness.
