Description

The object is a component of Catholic liturgical vestments.

It is a loose garment reaching to mid-thigh, with short wide sleeves, a shoulder yoke, and a square ("bateau") neckline. Made entirely of openwork cotton tulle with a floral ornament. The lower hem edge and sleeve edges are wavy, bordered by a continuous dense contour. The ornament consists of large stylized flowers, leaves, palmettes, and scrollwork against a mesh ground with various weave patterns.

Note: the cotta is a short liturgical garment in the form of a short white tunic with wide sleeves, worn over a cassock or ordinary dark clothing (in the case of lay altar servers or readers), and worn during Catholic services.

The object entered the museum's holdings in 1949. It was used in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kharkiv.
