Description
The cuff has the form of a truncated cone. The front is made of homespun block-printed fabric with a white floral-geometric ornament on a red ground. The upper and lower edges are bound with a strip of light-blue linen.
The reverse is lined with bleached homespun linen.
The object entered the museum's holdings in 1955.
Note: cuffs (or "poruchi") are part of the liturgical vestments of Orthodox clergy (deacons, priests, and bishops). They gather the sleeves of the sticharion or under-vestment at the wrist so they do not hinder the movement of the hands; they remind the clergyman that he acts not by his own strength but through the grace of God, and symbolize Christ's path during his sufferings (as well as purity and readiness to perform the Sacraments).
