Description

The icon is rectangular, made of yellow metal, with a shallow recessed "ark." At the top center of the icon is a suspension loop. The icon shows a full-length image of the Virgin Mary, dressed in a tunic and maphorion, with a round halo around her head. The figure of the Mother of God is in a three-quarter turn to the right, her head inclined to one side; she holds a scepter in her left hand, and stretches her right hand toward an angel. She is surrounded by people suffering various sorrows, with flowers above her. To the left and right of the halo is the Church Slavonic inscription: "Mother of God." At the top of the icon is a half-length image of Jesus Christ above the clouds, flanked by the inscription: "Jesus Christ." Around the perimeter of the icon is a double frame.

The icon was donated to the museum by Ivan Fedorovych Kholmohorsky of Kharkiv in 1989.

Legend: the Icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" symbolizes intercession and mercy. The Mother of God is depicted as the Comforter, surrounded by the sick and the suffering, while angels bring solace, comfort, healing, and salvation. The faithful pray before this image in times of hardship, for healing from illness, and for protection from misfortune.
