Description
The icon is made of yellow metal; rectangular in form, close to square. The icon has a shallow recessed "ark," a frame, and a narrow rim. The composition of the icon is in two registers. Above is the scene of the Resurrection of Christ; below, his Descent into Hell. Christ is depicted twice, against the background of an elongated, almond-shaped mandorla of "divine glory." In Hell, Christ is surrounded by the Old Testament prophets, kings, Adam, and Eve. Above, in the "Resurrection" scene, an angel, Elijah, Enoch, the Penitent Thief, and a six-winged seraph are shown beside Christ. The icon is decorated with a frame of floral ornament. At the top is the inscription: "THE RESURRECTION...OF CHRIST" (in Church Slavonic). The icon is covered in blue, light-blue, and turquoise enamel. The casting is heavy. The relief of the image is painterly in character.
The icon was acquired by the museum from Viktor Panteleimonovych Hostishchev of Kharkiv in 1983.
