Description

The icon is made of yellow metal, rectangular in form. The icon has a deep recessed "ark" with a narrow frame and a low rim. At the center of the composition is a full-length image of the Virgin Mary, her head inclined and her arms outstretched. She is surrounded on both sides by the sick, the crippled, and those afflicted at heart. At the top of the icon is the Church Slavonic inscription: "Mother of God, Joy of All Who Sorrow." The central field is bordered by a wide frame with a floral ornament, into which are set eighteen round medallions with half-length images of the Savior, saints, and angels.

The icon entered the museum's holdings in 1983.

The Icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" symbolizes intercession and mercy. The Mother of God is depicted as the Comforter, surrounded by the sick and the suffering, while angels bring solace, comfort, healing, and salvation. The faithful pray before this image in times of hardship, for healing from illness, and for protection from misfortune.
