Description
The icon is rectangular, made of yellow metal, with a shallow recessed "ark." At the top center of the icon is a suspension loop. At the center of the composition is an image of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Christ on her left arm. Christ blesses with his right hand and holds a rolled scroll in his left. The Mother of God is shown half-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right; the Child is shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left. The Mother of God wears a bordered tunic and maphorion with the visible stars of the Ever-Virgin. Christ wears a chiton and himation. Around the Mother of God's head is a round halo with a toothed border, and around the Infant's head a cruciform halo. Beside the heads of the Virgin Mary and Christ are the Church Slavonic inscriptions "Mother of God" and "Jesus Christ." The image of the Virgin Mary and the Infant sits within a rectangular double cord-like frame with a geometric ornament. The background of the icon is covered in white, green, and blue enamel.
The icon was donated to the museum by Sofiia Petrivna Cherniakhivska of Kharkiv in 1960.
