Description

An oval medallion-plaque, painted in enamel, set in an oval mount, decorated around its contour with an openwork metal border in the form of radiance with sharp-pointed rays; at the top of the mount is the remnant of an applied decoration with a floral rosette. On the front is a bust-length image of Jesus Christ, in a crown of thorns, with a reed in his hands. Around his head is a cruciform halo, his head inclined to the right, his gaze lowered, his dark-chestnut hair loose, his beard short; on his forehead and body are drops of blood. Christ wears draped garments in pink-red and orange tones. On either side of his head are the inscriptions: on the left "IIS," on the right "KHS."

The object was an element of the decoration of a Gospel or an artophorion, which belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum.

In 1941 the parent object was evacuated, and returned to Kharkiv in 1944.
