Description
A round medallion-plaque with a knee-length image of the Lord Sabaoth (God the Father) painted in enamel, set in a silver mount with a rim. The figure of an elder with long gray hair and a forked beard is placed frontally against a light background, inclined toward the viewer; around his head is a shining, yellow triangular halo (a symbol of the Trinity). His right hand is extended to the side in a gesture of blessing, his left hand grasps a long golden scepter, surmounted by a cross-shaped finial. Sabaoth wears a pink-red (carmine) chiton and an olive-green himation. In the lower part of the composition, against a background of golden rays, is a white dove (the Holy Spirit) flying downward; around it are clouds in a white-gray-violet palette. The background is light, cream-yellow.
On the reverse is a metal screw at the center, for attaching the plaque to a base.
The object was an element of the decoration of a Gospel or an artophorion, which belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum.
In 1941 the parent object was evacuated, and returned to Kharkiv in 1944.
