Description
A four-armed carved cross, in a metal frame, with a handle. On the front of the cross is a depiction of a seven-pointed cross, on whose straight crossbar are the letters "INRI" ("Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews"). Above is a rectangular cartouche bearing the inscription "TSR SLVY" ("King of Glory"), beneath it "IS" and "KHS" ("Jesus Christ"). On the left arm is a depiction of the "column of scourging," and on the right a ladder. At the bottom of the cross are the instruments of the Passion — a spear and a reed — marked with the letters "K" and "T" ("spear" and "reed"), respectively. On the reverse, at the center, is a depiction of a christogram. Above is a depiction of the Holy Sepulchre. On the left arm is a depiction of a ladder, and on the right, "steps." At the bottom of the cross are the Royal Doors with a cross, beneath which are the Tablets of the Covenant. The metal frame of the cross is decorated on both front and back with an engraved floral ornament. The cross has a cone-shaped handle.
The cross belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the H. S. Skovoroda Historical Museum. It was evacuated in 1941 and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
