Description

The icon's frame is gold-toned, rectangular, and covered most of the painting, leaving free the face, hands, and feet of the Prophet Elijah. The image of Elijah is positioned on the left, seated. Elijah's right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, and in his left he holds an unfurled scroll with the Church Slavonic inscription: "being very jealous." He wears a chiton and himation, with an applied radiant halo around his head. To the right of Elijah is a depiction of a sown field with small shoots and a hilly landscape. In the upper left corner is a depiction of clouds. On either side of the halo, within rectangular cartouches, is the inscription: "Holy Prophet Elijah." Above Elijah's shoulders are the inscriptions: "The vestment was erected by the head of the Novomoskovsk detachment, Sava Slushchenko" and "Gilded by the teacher of the Novomoskovsk school, Oleksandr Lange Pozdieiev." Around the perimeter of the icon is a frame decorated with an ornament of convex ovals and eight-petaled flowers at the corners.
