Description

The binding consists of two Gospel covers with a spine. The base is wooden, covered in metal. The surface of the front cover's face is silver-toned, covered with a relief floral ornament of winding branches with leaves and flowers, and nine gold-toned oval medallions. In the central medallion is a depiction of "The Transfiguration of the Lord"; in the corners are medallions depicting the Evangelists and their symbols. The central medallion is surrounded by four small medallions depicting God Sabaoth and the Holy Spirit as a dove in radiant rays; the other three depict saints. The spine of the Gospel is decorated with a floral ornament in the form of bouquets of flowers and fruit with leaves. The reverse of the back cover is covered with a relief floral ornament in the form of flowers, fruit, and bunches of grapes. At the corners of the cover are three ball-shaped feet with a floral ornament (one foot is lost). In the central medallion is placed a depiction of "The Annunciation," surrounded by three medallions with saints (one medallion is lost). The binding has one shaped clasp (one clasp is lost).

The Gospel cover was made by Ivan Ravich in 1721. The cover belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum. It was evacuated in 1941, and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
