Description
The icon's frame is rectangular and vertical in form, made of silver with cutouts for the "flesh" painting. Around the perimeter runs a frame of relief beads, bordered along the edge by a trim resembling a twisted cord. In the corners of the frame are rosettes. The central image is worked in high relief and dynamic in character: the saint, in armor and a cloak, rides a leaping horse. Below, beneath the horse's hooves, is a fallen human figure (the traditional motif of a defeated enemy). Around the saint's head is a round halo. In the upper right corner is a depiction of the Image of Christ Not Made by Hands, on a cloth.
Along the upper edge of the frame is the Church Slavonic inscription "The Image of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius."
The object belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum; it was evacuated in 1941 and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
