Description

The artophorion is made of gray- and gold-toned metal. It takes the form of a three-tiered monumental church with a dome-shaped cupola. The base of the lower tier is rectangular, with gold-toned edges alternating with rocaille cartouches bordered by winding floral ornament. At the corners of the lower tier are set three gold-toned shaped consoles (one console is lost). The walls of the lower tier are decorated with columns, between which are depicted the following scenes: "The Mocking of Christ," "The Flagellation of Christ," and "The Entombment." One side wall is lost. On the inner side of the base of the middle tier is a scratched inscription (in Russian): "Repair done by Dmitrii Ivanovich Rodionov, 1910." The second tier is decorated in the same way as the first (two consoles and one side wall are lost). The walls depict the scenes: "The Last Supper," "The Washing of the Feet," and "The Resurrection of Christ." The upper tier is decorated with rocaille cartouches with floral ornament, with one shaped console (one console is lost) and four figures at the corners (now lost). At the center of the tier is set a hexagonal drum, in the upper part of which are depicted a four-pointed cross, the instruments of the Passion, and the arched windows of a church. The upper tier ends in a hexagonal, dome-shaped cupola.

The artophorion belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.

Note: the artophorion is a sacred vessel used in Christian churches to store the Holy Gifts (the Body and Blood of Christ), intended for the communion of the faithful. It is the most sacred object in the church and is usually placed on the altar table in the sanctuary. The artophorion is made in the form of a small church, chapel, or domed tower, inside which is a box for the Holy Gifts.
