Description
The Gospel binding is made of gold-toned metal.
This fragment of the binding is rectangular, with five medallions — two in the upper part, two in the lower, and one at the center (all now lost). Each medallion is set within a rectangular frame, with radiating rays at its corners. To the left and right of the central medallion is a composition of a rhombus with an eight-petaled flower set into it, surrounded by leaves, a bouquet, and a beaded string. Between the upper and lower medallions are floral compositions in vases. Around the perimeter of the binding, within the frame, is a floral ornament of flowers and leaves.
The Gospel binding belonged to the collection of the pre-war Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in 1944.
