Description
A four-armed, two-part hinged cross with widened, trilobed shaped ends. At the center is a small applied four-armed cross with enamel, bearing a depiction of the "Crucifixion" (now lost). At the ends of the cross and beneath the "Crucifixion" are applied oval enameled medallions (partly or wholly lost). At the top of the cross is a medallion (partly lost) depicting God Sabaoth in a crimson himation, with a triangular halo around his head. At the end of the left arm is a medallion depicting the Mother of God, dressed in a crimson maphorion, her hands folded in a gesture of prayer, with a round halo above her head. At the end of the right arm and beneath the "Crucifixion," the medallions are lost. At the bottom of the cross is a relief depiction of a column, on which a rooster sits. Behind the column are the crossed instruments of the Passion — a spear and a reed with a sponge — flanked by a knife and a covered vessel. Beneath the column is a depiction of hills. On the reverse of the cross is a relief depiction of bouquets of leaves and flowers in vases.
The cross belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
