Description
The cup of the chalice is made of gold- and silver-toned metal. The cup is gold-toned, with a silver-toned openwork "sorochka" (overlay) decorated with medallions. In the lower part of the overlay is a six-pointed star, above which alternate winding silver-toned acanthus leaves and three oval medallions within a gold-toned rocaille cartouche. The medallions bear images of Jesus Christ.
The foot of the chalice is made of gold-toned metal, stepped, in two tiers. The lower tier is decorated with a composition of flowers and leaves and images of cherubim. Between the lower and upper tiers is a "band." The upper tier is decorated with a winding floral ornament and three oval medallions with images of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God. The upper part of the upper tier is cylindrical, into which a metal rod is fitted for attaching the cup.
The chalice belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the H. S. Skovoroda Historical Museum; it was evacuated in 1941 and returned to Kharkiv in 1944.
Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion.
The chalice represents the cup given by Jesus Christ to his disciples at the Last Supper, with the words: "Drink of it, all of you, for this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
