Description

The artophorion is made of silver- and gold-toned metal. It takes the form of a three-tiered monumental church with a dome. It is set on four shaped feet. At the corners of the base of the lower tier are attached three cast cherub figures (one cherub is lost). The base of the lower tier is rectangular, decorated around its perimeter with golden winding acanthus leaves. To its upper part are attached four feet in the form of "animal paws," on which the middle tier of the artophorion is set. Three cherub figures are attached to the corners of the base of the middle tier (one cherub is lost). The base of the middle tier is rectangular, decorated around its perimeter with golden winding acanthus leaves. On the front wall of this tier were doors, decorated with a rectangular cartouche (now lost). On the side faces of the tier is a floral-geometric ornament set within rectangular cartouches, bordered by shells with acanthus leaves, with applied round medallions bearing biblical scenes at the corners. On the back wall is a floral-geometric composition with a cherub's head within a rectangular cartouche, above which, at top center and bottom, are applied cherub figures. The cartouche is bordered by bouquets of flowers, fruit, and cherub heads, with applied round medallions bearing biblical scenes at the corners. The front wall of this tier is decorated in the same way as the back. The upper edge of the middle tier is decorated with winding acanthus leaves. The base of the upper tier is decorated with leaves. On the front wall were doors, decorated with a rectangular cartouche (now lost). On the side faces of the tier are vases with flowers, fruit, and leaves within square cartouches, bordered by depictions of cherubim and winding leaves. On the back wall is a cornucopia with fruit, flowers, and leaves within a rectangular cartouche, bordered by cherubim and a lavish floral ornament. The front wall of this tier is decorated in the same way as the back. The upper tier is crowned by a shaped dome with depictions of cherubim and bouquets of fruit and leaves. At the top of the dome, on either side, are set cast figures of angels on clouds. The finial of the dome is lost.

The artophorion belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.

Note: the artophorion is a sacred vessel used in Christian churches to store the Holy Gifts (the Body and Blood of Christ), intended for the communion of the faithful. It is the most sacred object in the church and is usually placed on the altar table in the sanctuary. The artophorion is made in the form of a small church, chapel, or domed tower, inside which is a box for the Holy Gifts.
