Description
Printed between 1768 and 1799.
Printed in two colors (black and red), the text in Church Slavonic, with running heads at the top center and catchwords in the lower right corner of the pages. Letter foliation appears in the upper right corner, with letter signatures at the bottom center of the page. The book's decoration is complemented by headpieces, tailpieces, and cast ornaments.
On the first flyleaf is a provenance record in the form of a dated inscription: "No. 4 / 1942 / 1 / III," together with an ownership inscription: "Fr. Petro Taranchenko... Hrynchenko," followed further in the text by ownership notes in one hand concerning the dates of various feasts, calculated according to the Paschal tables.
The book has a hard cover with wooden boards, covered in brown leather; around the perimeter of the boards is a narrow scalloped frame, within whose field on the front is an oval medallion with a composition depicting a double-headed eagle and a St. Andrew's cross. On the edges of the boards are the remnants of clasps.
The Menaion was acquired by the museum from [A. A.] Kyrylenko in 1977.
Note: the Menaion for October is an Orthodox liturgical book containing prayers for each saint or feast, arranged separately for each month.
