Description
The lower part of the chalice is made of silver-toned metal. The base is oval, transitioning into a hollow, conical stem with a profiled, baluster-shaped "apple" and several constrictions, with a wavy, profiled rim. The upper edge of the stem ends in a flare with an uneven, broken edge. The lower part of the chalice is decorated with a relief floral ornament in the form of lush acanthus scrollwork, garlands of flowers and fruit, and cherubim. The stem finishes in an overlay in the form of acanthus leaves. Around the rim is an inlaid inscription: "Semen...to the village of Popelyasta, for the altar of the church...of theology..."
The object belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum. It was evacuated in 1941, and the base of the chalice, as its fragment, was returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion.
The chalice represents the cup given by Jesus Christ to his disciples at the Last Supper, with the words: "Drink of it, all of you, for this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
