Description
The lower part of the chalice is made of silver- and gold-toned metal. The base is round in cross-section, dome-shaped, with a cylindrical stem and a wide, curved-out rim. The lower part is decorated with scrollwork, shells, and floral motifs bordering gold-toned oval medallions. Six of the medallions bear engraved, multi-figure scenes of the Passion cycle. The rim is decorated with gold-toned cartouches and winding leaves. On the reverse, within the medallions, is an inlaid inscription: "For the Church of the Holy Trinity of Samarchyn, the servant of God Fedir Kolotnecha, that no misfortune befall him, prayed, and on December 17, 1766, erected this cup."
The cup was made in 1776. The object belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum. It was evacuated in 1941, and the base of the chalice, as its fragment, was returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion.
The chalice represents the cup given by Jesus Christ to his disciples at the Last Supper, with the words: "Drink of it, all of you, for this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
