Description

Printed in the period 1762–1796 (the reign of Catherine II).

This is an expanded and revised edition of the calendar known as the "Bruce Calendar," first printed in the early 18th century.

Contains engravings and a compendium of astrological material and superstitions, as set out in the "forbidden books" of Old Rus'.

The calendar was acquired by the museum from Ye. P. Akhalkina.

Note: "forbidden" (or "rejected") books were apocryphal texts banned by the Christian Church — collections of divination and magic that appeared in Rus' from the 11th century onward, alongside translations from Byzantium and Bulgaria. Copies of such books were in great demand.
