Description
A four-armed carved cross, in a metal frame, with a handle. On the front of the cross is a depiction of the "Crucifixion" with attendant figures, surrounded by multi-figure scenes from Holy Scripture and figures of saints, poorly legible due to the object's condition. On the reverse of the cross is depicted the Mother of God holding the Infant Jesus Christ in her arms, surrounded by figures of saints, likewise poorly legible due to condition. The metal frame of the cross is made of silver-toned metal, decorated with relief acanthus leaves around the perimeter, covered with a stippled chased background; the edges are bordered with a twisted cord ornament. The cross has a faceted handle ending in a ball. On the facets of the cross is the inscription: "This cross was commissioned by the Cossack Danylo...for the sloboda of Kamysavka, for the holy hierarch Nicholas of Christ, in the month of December, 1785."
The cross was made in 1785. The object belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the H. S. Skovoroda Historical Museum. It was evacuated in 1941 and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
