Description
A four-armed carved cross, in a metal frame, with a handle. On the front of the cross is a depiction of the "Crucifixion" against a backdrop of city buildings. Above, over Christ, is a depiction of God the Father amid clouds. On the left arm is depicted the Mother of God, and on the right [John the Baptist] (image lost). At the bottom of the cross is depicted the scene ["The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane"]. On the reverse, at the center, is the scene of the Baptism of Christ by John the Baptist in the waters of the Jordan. Above is a depiction of the Holy Spirit as a dove in radiance, descending upon Christ. On the left arm is an angel (image lost), and on the right [the bank of the Jordan]. At the bottom of the cross is a depiction of the "Way of the Cross." Between the crossbars are radiating rays; at the bottom, on either side, are finishes in the form of stylized floral branches. The cross has a faceted handle with a round base.
The cross belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the H. S. Skovoroda Historical Museum. It was evacuated in 1941 and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
