Description
The book was printed at the printing house of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra in the 18th century.
Printed in a single color. The text is in Church Slavonic, set within a double linear frame with running heads; catchwords appear at the foot of the pages, on the right. Letter foliation appears in the upper right corner of the frame, with signatures below the frame, at the bottom center of the pages. The book's decoration is complemented by headpieces, tailpieces, and initials.
At the end of the book is an alphabetical index of the names of saints, their Lives, sufferings, and commemorations.
On the front flyleaf is a manuscript text in graphite pencil: "After the late liturgy, the sacristan is to serve a moleben with the blessing of water, the whole clergy. Take the censer, the sprinkler, the Trebnik, and two Akathists."
On the pages of the book are the following marginalia, constituting the book's provenance: "Of the Poltava Cathedral Church of the Dormition," "This book belongs to the Poltava Church of the Transfiguration, signed by the priest [signature undeciphered]," "...Lenten Triodion / For edification Pavlo Voitenko read," "To His Well-Born.../ To His Well-Born the Justice of the Peace from whoever was the mediator/...," "Received... from...the sexton Mykhailo."
The edition has a hard cover, with wooden boards, covered in brown leather with stamping, now much worn and difficult to read on the surface. On the edges of the boards are the remnants of clasps of metal and leather.
The book was donated to the museum by Dudnyk of Kharkiv in 1958.
Note: the Menaion (Service, or Monthly, Menaion) for June, July, and August is a rare monument of early Cyrillic printed literature, containing texts for each day of the summer months.
