Description
A combined chalice, made of silver and coconut shell. It takes the form of a cup on a tall stem, with a profiled, spherical "apple" and a widened, pyramid-shaped base square in cross-section. The cup of the chalice is made of coconut shell, bordered at the top by a smooth, silver-toned metal band. The surface of the cup is covered with an openwork metal "sorochka" (overlay), ornamented with a relief, stylized depiction of a winding grapevine with leaves and clusters.
On the base are two horizontal cord-like bands; the facets are decorated with stylized leaves with cut-out edges. The base and stem are joined to the cup by a metal rod.
The chalice belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944.
Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion (the Eucharist).
