Description

The folding icon is made of yellow metal. The leaves are rectangular and joined by tightly fitted hinges; the top of each leaf has a kiot-shaped header in the form of a church dome. The domes of the first and fourth leaves have openings for hanging. Three of the leaves bear scenes of the Twelve Great Feasts in twelve rectangular compartments, four to a leaf. Left to right: "The Annunciation," "The Nativity of Christ," "The Nativity of the Mother of God," "The Presentation in the Temple," "The Presentation of the Lord," "The Baptism," "The Transfiguration of the Lord," "The Entry into Jerusalem," "The Descent into Hell," "The Ascension," "The Descent of the Holy Spirit," "The Dormition of the Mother of God." On the fourth leaf, in four compartments, are icons of the Mother of God: "Sign," "Vladimir," "Tikhvin," and "Kazan with selected saints." In the domes are: "The Crucifixion," "The New Testament Trinity," "The Exaltation of the Precious Cross," and "In Praise of the Mother of God." In the dome is the inscription: "WE WORSHIP THY CROSS, O MASTER, AND GLORIFY THY HOLY RESURRECTION" (in Church Slavonic). On the reverse, within an oval frame, is a symbolic depiction of Golgotha in the form of an eight-pointed cross with the instruments of the Passion. The surrounding field bears a floral ornament.
