Description
The icon is made in a combined technique of hand embroidery, by which the "flesh" painting and a metal riza with frame are reproduced. The face and hands are embroidered in colored silk in pastel tones; everything else is worked in gold metal twisted and corded thread, with the addition of gold sequin embroidery; the frame's decoration is complemented by an appliqué of colored metal foil.
The subject of the icon corresponds to the iconographic type "Christ Pantocrator."
The icon shows, within an imagined "ark," a half-length image of Jesus Christ with long hair, a small mustache and beard. He is seated in a three-quarter turn to the right, dressed in a chiton and himation, with a round halo around his head; his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, and his left rests on a hemisphere surmounted by a cross. To the left and right of Christ is the inscription "Christ Pantocrator."
Around the perimeter of the icon is a wide frame, ornamented with a stylized garland of lush lilac-colored carnations with branches and green leaves.
The icon is mounted on a wooden base. The outer contour and edges are covered in burgundy velvet, and the reverse is lined with crimson silk fabric. At the top of the panel is a ring for hanging.
The icon entered the museum's holdings in 1956.
