Description

The icon shows a half-length image, in a three-quarter turn to the right, of the Mother of God in her youth. She holds her hands folded on her chest in prayer and looks toward the crucifixion to the right. She has large dark eyes, and smooth dark hair falls to her shoulders. The icon is set in a silver riza with cutouts for the "flesh" painting and the crucifixion. On the riza are worked the Mother of God's garments — a chemise and a cruciform maphorion with stars on the shoulders — a rectangular frame with a geometric ornament around its perimeter, and, at the bottom center, a medallion depicting a double-headed eagle.

To the left of the medallion, on a white enamel rectangle, is the inscription (in Russian): "DEPICTION OF THE MIRACLE-WORKING [ICON] OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD"; to the right of the medallion, on another white enamel rectangle, is the inscription: "OF AKHTYRKA, WHICH APPEARED ON JULY 2, 1739" (both inscriptions in Church Slavonic/Russian). The halos are applied metalwork. Around the edge of the icon is a relief frame. Beneath the riza, the oil-painted face and hands of the Mother of God and the crucifixion are visible.
Hallmarks: an assay mark on the halo and riza: "84."

The icon belonged to Sofiia Petrivna Hryhorieva and was donated to the museum by Varvara Kreider in 1966.
