Description

The icon belongs to the "Hodegetria" type (from the Greek "She Who Shows the Way").

The surface of the icon is covered with a silver riza with cutouts for the "flesh" painting. Everything else is engraved on the field of the riza. The icon shows a half-length image of the Mother of God, supporting the Child with her left hand, her head inclined slightly toward him, and pointing to him with her right hand. Christ blesses with his right hand and holds a scroll in his left. Christ is shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left. The Mother of God wears a tunic and maphorion; Christ wears a chiton and himation. The Mother of God's maphorion bears the stars of the Ever-Virgin, covered with a dense floral pattern of flowers, leaves, and scrollwork. The halos are applied, radiant, gold-toned. On the riza, to the left of the Mother of God's halo, on a raised blue enamel medallion, is the inscription "MR," to the right "ΘU" (inscriptions in Church Slavonic; exact reproduction of the lettering is not possible in digital text). To the left of the image of the Mother of God, on blue enamel, is the inscription "SMOLENSK[...]."

The icon's frame is in the Ukrainian Baroque style, composed of acanthus leaves, scrollwork, shells, and two cherubim in the lower corners.

The icon panel has two end battens; at the top is a ring for hanging.

The icon's frame was made in 1850.

The icon belonged to S. P. Hryhorieva of Kharkiv and was donated to the museum by Varvara Ivanivna Kreider in 1966.
