Description
The image corresponds to the "Christ Pantocrator" iconographic type, in its Western, Latinized variant.
Christ is shown frontally, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, his left hand resting on an orb (globus cruciger), surmounted by a small flower-shaped cross with golden radiance. Christ wears a red chiton and a dark-green himation. The face is painted in a realistic, academic manner, with soft chiaroscuro modeling and a blush on the cheeks; the hair and beard are dark. Around the Savior's head is an applied, many-rayed halo with a relief crown. Around the perimeter of the icon is a wide frame with a floral acanthus pattern and palmettes, the corner segments decorated with radiant glory. To the left and right of the halo are floral cartouches with rectangular, three-dimensional appliqués bearing engraved inscriptions "IS," "KHS."
The icon panel has inset end battens.
The icon's frame was made in the 19th century.
The icon belonged to S. P. Hryhorieva of Kharkiv and was donated to the museum by Varvara Ivanivna Kreider in 1966.
