Description

At the center of the icon is a full-length image of the Mother of God with the Infant Christ on her left arm. The Mother of God is shown as the Heavenly Queen. On her head is a crown, and around her figure an oval radiance — a mandorla (Greek), the Divine glory. On either side are the sick and the crippled, afflicted at heart. Angels move among them. Beside them are inscriptions — words from a prayer to the Theotokos, in which the suffering turn to the Mother of God (in Church Slavonic; exact reproduction of the lettering is not possible in digital text): "LOOK UPON... US, THE SORROWFUL AND SINFUL," "RAIMENT FOR THE NAKED," "FEEDER OF THE HUNGRY," "WALKING FOR THE LAME," "HEALING FOR THE SICK." Above the sufferers, to the right, are shown the Venerable Gregory and Saint Theodore, watching what is taking place. Above the Mother of God, amid clouds and radiance, is a depiction of God the Father; to the left is the inscription "IMAGE OF THE PROTECTION OF THE THEOTOKOS OF ALL," and to the right "WHO SORROW, JOY." Below the image of the Mother of God is written the 13th Kontakion from the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos. The icon is painted on a panel reinforced with two inset battens. Yellow and brown tones predominate.
