Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum Ж-1111 At the center of the icon is a full-length image of the naked Jesus Christ, in a three-quarter turn to the left, standing in the dark-blue waters of the Jordan River. His arms are lowered, his legs crossed; above his head is a cruciform halo and the inscriptions "IS" and "KHS" ("Jesus Christ"). To the left and right of Christ, on opposite banks, stand John the Baptist and three angels. John the Baptist lays his hand on the Savior's head. John the Baptist is shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left, wearing a brown chiton and a green himation, with a round halo around his head. The angels are shown in a three-quarter turn to the left, wearing chitons and himations. Two of the angels wear green chitons and red himations, and the third a red chiton and green himation. In their hands, stretched toward Christ, they hold white coverings. At the top of the icon, at the center, above the clouds, is a half-length image of God the Father, with long gray hair and a broad beard, in white garments. He blesses with both hands; around his head is a round halo, within which are inscribed crossed rhombuses of green and red. Rays of radiance emanate from his figure; to the left and right, above his shoulders, are the Church Slavonic inscriptions: "Our Lord." From God the Father, the Holy Spirit descends upon Christ in the form of a dove, echoing the Lord's halo, with three red rays. On either side of God the Father's figure is the inscription: "The Theophany of Our Lord Jesus Christ." The icon has a shallow recessed "ark" and a wide dark-brown frame. On the reverse, the icon is reinforced with two horizontal and two end inset battens. The icon belonged to the pre-war collection of the M. F. Sumtsov Sloboda Ukraine Museum. Legend: the icon "Theophany," or "Baptism of the Lord," is a sacred image showing the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, when the Holy Trinity was revealed to the people: the Son, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and the voice of God the Father from heaven.
