<lido:descriptiveNoteValue xml:lang="en">The icon belongs to the Hodegetria type (from the Greek "She Who Shows the Way").
The icon depicts the Mother of God with the Infant Christ, pointing to the Child with her right hand and tenderly supporting him with her left. Christ sits on her arm, blessing with his right hand while holding the Gospel in his left.
The Mother of God is shown half-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right; the Child is shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left. The Mother of God wears a red tunic with a gold border and a dark-blue maphorion bearing the visible star of the Ever-Virgin. Christ wears a red chiton. Golden crowns rest on the heads of both the Mother of God and the Child, with round golden halos around their heads.
The halos of the Mother of God and the Child overlap one another and are underscored around their contour by nine golden stars.
The image's frame is red, marked with a golden ribbon bearing elements of floral ornament.
The background of the icon is dark red. In the upper left and right corners is the Church Slavonic inscription "A Depiction of the Miracle-Working Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos," set both vertically and horizontally.
On the reverse, the icon is reinforced with two horizontal inset battens.
The icon belonged to the collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in 1944.
Legend: the Ozerianka Icon of the Mother of God is regarded as the chief holy relic and patroness of Kharkiv and the Sloboda Ukraine region. The icon's history dates back to the late 17th century. According to legend, it was found by a local mower in a forest near the village of Ozeriany. While working, he noticed the holy image partly caught on his scythe and partly beneath the roots of a nearby tree, where a candle was also burning. He took the icon home and prayed before it, but the next morning found it once again at the place of its appearance, whole and undamaged. A monastery, later named Ozerianska, arose at the site where the icon appeared; it housed the wonder-working icon of the Mother of God, likewise called the Ozerianka Icon, from which miracles began to occur. In 1794 the icon was transferred to the Transfiguration Monastery in Kuriazh.Local residents began to turn to this image as miracle-working. The Ozerianka Icon performed the most miracles during the cholera epidemic of 1871, when it was carried through the streets of Kharkiv to protect the inhabitants. People of different faiths felt its protection and peace, and even those of other confessions turned to the icon in hope of help. This became a genuine unifying force for the region's inhabitants, regardless of religious affiliation. With donations from the city's residents, the Church of the Ozerianka Icon was built at the end of the 19th century on the grounds of the Convent of the Protection. After its consecration on November 21, 1896, the wonder-working icon was kept there each time it was brought for the winter from the Kuriazh monastery. The original icon was unfortunately lost in the 1930s during the Soviet repressions, but a copy of the holy image is known to continue to astonish with numerous healings and to inspire the faithful to spiritual endeavor. Special veneration of the Ozerianka Icon remains alive to this day, and it is a symbol of hope for many Ukrainians. The Ozerianka Icon of the Mother of God, as an inexhaustible source of grace and strength, remains an important spiritual symbol, and the veneration of its image is a call to unity, faith, and peace.</lido:descriptiveNoteValue>
