Everything else is engraved in the field of the icon, bordered by a frame of floral ornament. The image consists of two parts. The upper, larger part shows the Mother of God, to whose right is Golgotha with the Head of Adam, the crucified Christ against a backdrop of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, and the tomb. On the Mother of God's chiton and maphorion are applied stars set with burgundy, green, and clear insets. Her hands are folded in a gesture of prayer, and her heart is pierced by a sword. To the left of the Mother of God is a post, wound with ropes, a reed with a sponge, and a spear, with a rooster atop the post. In the upper left corner of the icon is the moon, and in the upper right the sun amid clouds, together with the letters "MR" "ΘU" in relief rectangles. On the lower, smaller part of the frame are depicted a human hand, nails, a hammer and pincers on an oval tray, a scourge of thorns, a crown, a cup, a pitcher, a lantern, and a garment with dice cast for it. In the lower part of the frame is a mount for a plate with text (now detached), a brief inscription noting that the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos has been venerated since 1736, and that its face survived a fire unharmed. The frame belonged to the pre-war (pre-1941) part of the collection of the Historical Museum; it was evacuated in 1941 and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944. Legend: the Samara Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is a Christian Orthodox icon that was a holy relic of the Zaporozhian Cossacks in the Dnieper region of Ukraine. The icon appeared in the village of Novi Kodaky, near Katerynoslav, around the 18th century. Its origin is believed to lie in the East. Until the mid-1760s the icon was kept in the local Church of Saint Nicholas.
