Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum М-104 The foot of the chalice is made of silver-toned metal, stepped, in two tiers, with a round base. The lower tier is decorated with three spreading garlands of flowers, leaves, and fruit, alternating with convex vertical bands. Between the lower and upper tiers is a wide "band." The upper tier is decorated with three rocaille cartouches, into which are set: a four-pointed cross with the instruments of the Passion — a spear and a reed; a serpent coiled around a column with fruit; and the instruments of the Passion — a spear and a reed. Between the cartouches are lush acanthus leaves. The upper part of the tier is cylindrical. The chalice belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944. Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion.
