Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum М-55 The lower part of the chalice is made mostly of silver- and gold-toned metal. The chalice is in two tiers, with a round base and shaped edges curved outward, bearing a donor's inscription. The lower tier is decorated with bouquets of flowers and fruit and images of cherubim, alternating with acanthus leaves. The upper tier is in the form of a six-petaled flower, its facets alternating gold- and silver-toned with a diamond-mesh pattern. The edges of each facet bear a floral ornament. The second tier gradually tapers upward, with an overlay in the form of leaves, leading into a stem with an "apple" (knop) decorated with a floral ornament. Around the edge is the Church Slavonic inscription: "This cup was commissioned by the servant of God Hryhorii and his wife Hanna, for the forgiveness of sins, for the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity, in 1735." The chalice was made in 1735. The chalice belonged to the pre-war collection of the Sloboda Ukraine Museum named after H. S. Skovoroda. During the Second World War it was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in November 1944. Note: the chalice (potir) is the sacred liturgical cup used to consecrate wine and to celebrate the sacrament of Communion.
