Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum Ж-892 ЛВС-45 The icon is a variant of the Hodegetria (from the Greek "She Who Shows the Way"), in which the blessing Christ turns slightly toward the Mother of God, and his crossed legs are positioned so that the bare sole of his right foot is visible. The icon shows a half-length image of the Mother of God, inclining slightly toward Christ and supporting him with her left hand while pointing to him with her right. Christ, shown in a three-quarter turn to the left, blesses with his right hand. The icon is set in a silver riza with cutouts for the "flesh" painting; the halos are applied and radiant. On the riza are worked the Mother of God's garments — a tunic and maphorion — and Christ's garments — a chiton and himation; around the image is a rectangular frame with a floral-geometric ornament, with beveled corners. At the bottom of the riza, within a small rectangular frame on white enamel, is the inscription "TIKHVIN M.G." [Mother of God]. The icon belonged to Sofiia Petrivna Hryhorieva of Kharkiv, and was donated to the museum by Varvara Ivanivna Kreider in 1966. Legend: the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most venerated icons of the Theotokos. It became renowned for many healings and miracles, and was especially invoked in prayer for the healing of sick children. According to church tradition, it was created by the holy Evangelist Luke during the lifetime of the Most Holy Theotokos herself. In the 5th century the icon was transferred to Constantinople, where the Blachernae church was built for it. It remained there for almost nine centuries. In 1383 the Tikhvin Icon suddenly disappeared from the Blachernae church, and, according to the chronicles, appeared that same year in Rus before fishermen on Lake Ladoga, not far from Tikhvin. After several miraculous movements through the air, the icon came to rest near Tikhvin. The people joyfully began building a church at the site the Theotokos had chosen for her icon to remain. A stone church was later built there, and in 1560 the Tikhvin Dormition Monastery for men was founded. In 1944 the icon was taken to Europe, and later to the United States, where it was kept at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago.
