Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum Ж-1320 At the center of a complex composition is an image of the Mother of God with the Infant Christ, whom she supports with her left hand while holding "Jacob's Ladder" (uniting the earthly and heavenly realms) in her right. The image is set within a stylized black-and-red eight-pointed star-flower amid colored clouds. The Mother of God wears a red tunic and a dark-blue maphorion with the visible stars of the Ever-Virgin; around her head is a round golden halo. Christ wears a green chiton and a red himation, his right hand raised in blessing, with a cruciform golden halo around his head. Beneath their figures is an image of an angel in a white chiton and green himation, with a round golden halo around his head. Between the rays of the star are paired light-green, dark-green, ochre and maroon clouds bearing images of angels, above which is the Church Slavonic inscription "Angels of the Lord." The background of the icon is gold, with stylized "tongues of flame" (of the Burning Bush). The image's frame is black, decorated around its perimeter with a golden geometric ornament flecked with red paint. At the top center of the icon's frame is the title of the image: "The Burning Bush of the Most Holy Theotokos" (inscribed in Church Slavonic). The icon is painted on three panels joined by inset end battens. On the reverse of the icon are the inscriptions: "Milkov Volodymyr to Halyna," "The Enameled Burning Bush." The icon was seized at the Chop customs post. It entered the museum by decision of the State Customs Committee of Ukraine and the National Committee for the Return of Cultural Property to Ukraine under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 1995. Legend: the precise origin of the "Burning Bush" image of the Mother of God is not known. It probably derives from the biblical story of the Lord appearing to Moses as a burning bush on Mount Sinai. This bush, which burns yet is not consumed, became a prefiguration of the Mother of God — a woman who bore the Divine Word within her, like a fire that does not burn. This episode symbolizes the Immaculate Conception, in which human nature is united with the divine without harm.
