Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum Ж-1307 At the center of the composition is the Infant Jesus Christ, wrapped in white swaddling clothes with a red border, lying in the manger. Around his head is a round golden radiance with rays of white light; to the left and right of his head are the letters "IS" and "KHS" ("Jesus Christ"). To his left sits the Mother of God, looking at the Child, her right hand pressed to her chest, her left holding out a swaddling cloth toward Christ's head. She wears a light-blue chiton; on her head is a white veil with red dots, over which is a crimson maphorion with a gold-toned border covering her knees. Around the Virgin Mary's head is a round golden halo with a thin white band, above which is the Church Slavonic inscription: "Mother of God." Behind the Mother of God stands Joseph, his right hand pressed to his chest. He has gray hair combed back, a long mustache and beard; he wears a light-blue chiton and a yellow himation. Around Joseph's head is a round golden halo with a thin white band, above which is the Church Slavonic inscription: "Holy Venerable Joseph." Behind Joseph is the wall of a cave. To the right of the Infant is a young shepherd bowing to him, his hands folded in a gesture of prayer. He has long wavy light-brown hair and wears a brown chiton and a gray himation. Behind the manger with the Infant stands an older shepherd, leaning on a staff with both hands. He has long wavy hair beginning to gray, a long gray mustache and beard, and wears a brown chiton and a red himation. Behind the shepherd's figure is a low course of white masonry and a fragmentary depiction of a wooden roof with supports. In the background are green hills, to the right of which are stone city buildings. In the dark-blue sky is the Star of Bethlehem, its radiance directed toward the Infant Jesus Christ. At the top center of the icon is the inscription: "The Nativity of Christ." The icon was donated to the museum by Maria Tykhonivna Filatova of Kharkiv in 1991. The icon was in use among residents of the village of Bilyi Kolodiaz, Krasnokutsk district, Kharkiv region.
