Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum Ж-1306 At the center of the icon is the scene of Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary with the news of the birth of Jesus Christ. Archangel Gabriel stands on the left, and the Virgin Mary is shown on the right, seated in a chair. The Virgin Mary is shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left; the archangel in a three-quarter turn to the right. The Virgin Mary has crossed her arms on her chest; she is wrapped in a dark-green maphorion, beneath which a red garment is visible. Archangel Gabriel wears a yellow chiton and a red himation. He extends his right hand toward the Virgin Mary, his left hand lowered. The background is yellow. Around the edge of the icon is a rectangular dark-brown frame. On the reverse, the icon is reinforced with inset end battens. The reverse and edges of the icon are covered in red velvet. The icon was acquired by the museum from Andrii Viktorovych Chubakha of Kharkiv in 1991. Legend: the Gospel of Luke recounts the miracle of the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel brought the Virgin Mary the news that she would bear the Son of God, the Savior of mankind. The icon "Annunciation" is a symbol of good news, hope, humility, and the beginning of humanity's salvation.
