<lido:descriptiveNoteValue xml:lang="en">The icon's subjects are arranged in two rows. Upper left: "Softening of Evil Hearts." The image of the Mother of God with the Child Christ, who blesses with his right hand, belongs to the Hodegetria type (from the Greek "She Who Shows the Way"). The Mother of God is shown half-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right. She wears a gold-toned maphorion and a green shirt-like garment, with a gold-and-red crown on her head. On the Mother of God's chest, within a yellow disc, is a depiction of a dove on a red rhombus with concave sides, the rhombus overlaid on a quadrilateral with concave sides. With her left hand the Mother of God supports the Child; her right hand touches a gold-toned cross shown within a green oval at waist level. The Infant Christ is shown nearly full-length (to the feet), in a three-quarter turn to the left, wearing a red chiton, with a gold-and-red crown on his head. Christ blesses with his right hand and holds the Gospel in his left. Above their heads are halos. The background is golden. Upper right: "Eleusa" (Tenderness). The composition follows the Eleusa scheme: the Mother of God tenderly presses her cheek to Christ's cheek. The Mother of God is shown three-quarter length, in a three-quarter turn to the left; she wears a gold-toned maphorion and a green shirt-like garment. With her right hand she embraces the Infant Christ's shoulders, supporting him from below with her left. The Infant is shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right, taking hold of the Mother of God's chin with his left hand. Lower left: "Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker." The saint is shown half-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right. He blesses with his right hand and holds the Gospel in his left. The saint wears episcopal vestments: sakkos, omophorion, a mantle of green and gold. He has a high forehead with three deep wrinkles, gray hair, a small beard, brown eyes, and a thoughtful gaze. Against the golden background are half-length images of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God. Around Saint Nicholas's head is a halo. Lower right: "Saint Boniface." The saint is shown half-length, frontally. He wears a red chiton and green himation. In his raised right hand he holds a cross, his left touching the himation at waist level. Above his head is a halo. At the center is a medallion depicting the icon "Unexpected Joy." In it, a man (on the left) prays before an icon of the Mother of God. The Mother of God is shown half-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left, wrapped in a red maphorion. On her left arm is the Infant Christ, shown full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left. Christ wears a red himation, both arms bent at the elbows, palms upward. Around the perimeter of the icon is a wide frame, on whose gold field are depicted saints. Upper left: the Holy Apostle Luke, full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right, in a red chiton and green himation, holding the Gospel. Below him: Saint Elizabeth, full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the right, in a white veil, red himation, and purple shirt; in her left hand she holds a cross. Upper right: the Holy Apostle James, full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left, in a green chiton and purple himation, his left hand pressed to his chest in prayer. Below him: Saint Paisius, full-length, in a three-quarter turn to the left, in a purple klobuk, brown mantle, green riasa, and black epitrachelion, holding [a scroll] in his left hand. At the top and bottom of the icon, against the gold background, are floral and geometric ornaments. On the reverse, the panel is reinforced with two inset horizontal battens.
The icon was donated to the museum by Volodymyr Petrovych Kulikov of Kharkiv in 1985.</lido:descriptiveNoteValue>
